LAS VEGAS — Combining liposuction with Thermage–a radiofrequency energy system that heats the skin to produce collagen tightening and shortening–led to clinically significant tightening of abdominal skin at 28 weeks, compared with either treatment alone, results from a small study suggest. Combining the two procedures can be particularly useful in patients with loose skin or striae prior to liposuction, David Avram, M.D., said at the 13th International Symposium on Cosmetic Laser Surgery. This can be a way of enhancing our results in those patients. However, this was a small study. We obviously need to perform more studies with more patients. For the study, Dr. Avram and his associates treated 14 patients with standard tumescent liposuction plus Thermage (group 1), four patients with liposuction only (group 2), and two patients with Thermage only (group 3). After liposuction, patients in group 1 had four tattoo markers placed in a rectangular pattern in areas of loose abdominal skin. The area was calculated and recorded prior to treatment with Thermage, said Dr. Avram, a cosmetic dermatologist who practices in New York City.
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. — Consider Botox and dermabrasion as consistent home runs for the cosmetic part of your dermatology practice, Dr. Henry H. Roenigk Jr. said at a meeting sponsored by the Skin Disease Education Foundation. He used baseball terminology to share his take on whats hot and whats not in cosmetic dermatology. Heres his analysis: * Home Runs. These include Botox, C[O.sub.2] laser resurfacing, and dermabrasion. I think Restylane will be shown to be a home run, too, said Dr. Roenigk, a dermatologist who practices in Arizona. * Triples. These include chemical peels, liposuction, and combined intense pulsed light and radiofrequency technology.

After a year of real-estate downers, some of last years best performing Chicago banks will most likely see a decrease in earnings this year. For State Bank of Countryside, “real estate development is our specialty, that is our niche,” according to Diane Brennwald, senior vice president of compliance and marketing. Bank President Tom Boyle estimates 80 percent to 85 percent of the banks lending is in real estate development. With $978 million in assets, $525 million of loans and leases are in construction and land development. Thats 75 percent of the banks total loans and leases. Boyle is estimating that “earnings will be down 20 percent from 2006.” Earnings for State Bank in 2006 were just over $39 million which still leaves earnings estimates at above $30 million for 2007. State Bank had an ROAA of 2.46 percent last year. According to the FDIC, Broadway Bank has more than 85 percent of the banks assets (about $1 billion) in net loans and leases. Nearly half of Broadways net loans were in construction and land development as of June 2007. Another 32 percent was in commercial real estate. Broadway has been listed as the top earning bank in Chicago based on ROAA for five years. The bank is tightly held by the Giannoulias family which includes Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias. Broadways loan portfolio is believed to be more geographically diverse than State Banks with more lending out of state; however the real estate market in some of those other states is still being pummeled by foreclosures.

During the past three months, buyers have paid $35.6 million combined — an average of $63,568 a room — for the Wyndham Hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn and Towne Place Suites, all in northern Colorado Springs. In addition to the recent hotel sales, Springfield, Mo.-based John Q. Besides Latin America, your company is at work on projects in Africa, North America, Europe and the Middle East. What are the problems and advantages, compared to doing business in Latin America? What is not attractive about Latin America, from the point of view of a foreign investor, is that growth and size of market are small compared to other markets. Latin America has grown a little slower than the rest of the world and investors seem to be ignoring the region to the degree that they are focused on other markets they already know. On the other hand, a very favorable condition is that, despite crises here and there, in general Latin America is an extremely friendly place to do business. We dont have any contracts falling apart.

Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.
Health Alliance Medical Plans last month announced its coverage of two over-the-counter drugs formerly available by prescription only: Wyeths Alavert and Procter Gambles Prilosec OTC. Health Alliance will require members who have prescription drug benefits to obtain a written prescription from their physicians for the new over-the-counter drugs in order to receive coverage. The news at Health Alliance follows Medco Health Solutions expansion of its Generics First program in June to include Wyeths analgesic Advil and allergy remedy Alavert.
Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.

More Utahns are paying their mortgages on time, and the state continues to boast one of the lowest foreclosure rates in the nation, according to a new report. For the three months ended March 31, Utahs foreclosure rate dropped to 0.57 percent, less than half the national rate and down from the states 0.87 percent rate in the first quarter of 2006, according to the Mortgage Bankers Associations delinquency survey. The last time Utahs foreclosures were lower was in the second quarter of 1998, when the rate was 0.56 percent.
Contra Costa County, a place where much of the Bay Areas once- booming housing market soared in recent years, now has the fourth- highest rate of foreclosure in California. A year ago, Contra Costa County ranked 11th on the list of the states 58 counties, according to a report on foreclosure rates for September released this week by RealtyTrac.com, an online marketplace for foreclosure properties. Riverside County topped the September list. While foreclosures are rising locally and nationally, they are still far below 1 percent of households, according to the report.
Few Foreclosures: For those few San Diegans who can actually afford to buy a home in the county, the rate at which the homes are being foreclosed upon slowed dramatically last year. Marshall Prentice, the president of DataQuick, said that while theres always going to be a certain level of distress out there, right now, because of increasing home values, virtually everyone can sell or refinance if theyre really in trouble. While the trend in lower foreclosures was widespread across the state, the declines were strongest in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, which saw a 48.5 percent and 42.8 percent annual decline in the number of home foreclosures, respectively.

Read Column and Watch Video at askthebuilder.com/gutterguard MasterShield[TM] Gutter Protection does what it says, keeping all leaves, oak tassels, maple helicopters and even pine needles out of gutters, said Carter. I have tested numerous gutter guard products all claiming they keep debris out and homeowners wont have to clean their gutters again. As readers of my Web site know, my research has shown a very large percentage of these products fail in the springtime, and would not be a prudent investment. MasterShield[TM] makes me happy since I wont have to clean out my gutters again, and my wifes happy since Ill stay off the roof. We are excited and proud that Ask The Builders Tim Carter took The Clean Gutter Challenge and that MasterShield performed the best, said Karen Sager, President of MasterShield[TM] Gutter Protection. We are pleased to be his gutter protection system of choice and look forward to proving to Tims readers, and all homeowners, our product deserves this unique distinction.

The CDHC program consists of four three-credit courses that are created in an asynchronous format that allows the learner to complete class-work at their convenience throughout a 17-week semester. The courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters and are arranged in a semi-sequential order allowing the learner to build upon previously learned principles. Completion of the program is at the convenience of the learner. A few examples of learning objectives achieved upon completion of the program include a) differentiate public health from private practice, b) conduct a community oral health needs assessment, c) identify potential funding sources for public health programming, and d) plan a community oral health program. Byline: GTP WITH reference to the letter from Joseph B McManus in the Examiner, I am sorry to disappoint him but fluoride was not added to Huddersfields water supplies until after 1974 (possibly as late as 1977). Joseph would then be in his 20s. It is probable that his excellent dental health is due to his diet as a child; that is no sugary drinks and no sweets.
“From the beginning, Delta Dental has tried to get the message across that good oral health is an important part of overall health,” said Seitz. “Our goal has always been to improve oral health by making dental care more affordable to people throughout the state.” To help make his point about oral health and its importance, Seitz refers to statistics from the National Institute of Dental Research, which reveals that $1 spent on dental care now saves $4 in treatment costs later in an individuals life. Seitz also refers to research conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service which shows that dental and oral diseases that could have been prevented with proper dental care affect more than 50 percent of children in the U.S. The latter, he says, results in, among other things, missed school days–117,000 per 100,000 children, according to the Journal of Public Health. “Dental disease can keep a child from going to school and an adult away from work–just like other ailments have the potential to do,” said Seitz.

The Telephone as Computer The automation of the telephone doesnt replace human contact, nor should it. But, used for routine transactions, it is introducing a new level of efficiency to the way America does business. Although a few consumers may resist, most appreciate the benefits. And why not? All they need is that familiar old instrument, the telephone, and their business is handled without delay.
The telephone is a device for conducting spoken conversations across any distance beyond the range of the unaided human ear or the unamplified human voice. It works by transferring the atmospheric vibrations of human speech into a solid body and by converting those vibrations into electrical impulses sent through a conducting medium–originally metal wires but now optical fibers and electromagnetic microwaves as well. The word is a compound of two Greek words “tele” (”far”) and “phone” (”sound”) and the instrument is the most widely-used of all telecommunications appliances with hundreds of millions of telephones in use all over the world. On any given business day approximately two billion calls are placed just in the United States. The telephone is also the archetypal electronic “medium” in the sense of the word intended by Marshall McLuhan–an “extension of man”–but its social impact is grossly understudied in favor of the more readily observable “bully blow” of the television. Telephones are small and unobtrusive and their impact on our visible environment (except for the poles and wires) has not transformed our relationship to it.
We have all heard stories of the three-year-old who dialed 9-1-1 and saved his parents or siblings life. Learning to use the telephone is not only fun for children, but an important daily living skill as well. These days, the telephone is used for everything from shopping to banking. However, a child with a hearing impairment or an inability to speak clearly may not be able to use the standard telephone.

Who was present at the creation of certification of legal specialties in Florida? Tax lawyers, of course. Theyre everywhere. Nothing is as certain as death, taxes and more taxes. Another major contributor to the tax certification program whose work should be recognized and appreciated is Hank Raattama, who was an original member of the committee which drafted and implemented the tax certification plan and has remained a member to this day, with 21 years of service. The purpose of the program is to assist the public in making an informed decision when seeking and selecting an attorney with special knowledge, skills, and proficiency in the area of tax law. The Supreme Court of Florida approved the board certification program in 1982. While all lawyers are allowed to advertise, only certified attorneys can identify themselves as Florida Bar Board Certified or as a specialist. There are currently 281 attorneys board certified in tax law, which is about seven percent of all board certified attorneys.

As Dr. Greenawalt continued to study this phenomenon, he noticed that if one arch drops lower, patients had a “short” leg when standing and while lying down. After an adjustment, the functional “short” leg became even. However, if the patient stood up, the 11 short” leg reappeared. Dr. Greenawalt found that these orthotics were far more than an arch support or lift as they not only improved the alignment of the bones of the feet but also reduced the serial distortion up through the kinetic chain.? Later, Dr. Greenawalt spent lame with neurology professors at Northwestern College of Chiropractic (now Northwestern Health Sciences University) to explore the neuromuscular connection. He learned that throughout the body-in the muscles, joints, and ligaments of the body, including the feet-there are receptor nerve endings that affect neuromuscular function. If there is structural misalignment, there will be inappropriate or less than optimal neuromuscular coordination that affects muscular balance, strength, and proprioception. Customized orthotics have been demonstrated to have a positive effect on neuromuscular coordination and related function4,5

Coffee futures moved back above $1 in July, up from lows of 95 cents in mid-June. Prices likely will fluctuate because of the Brazilian weather for the next two months. There have been 17 freeze events in Brazil over the past 42 years, but only three in the past 21 years. Odds are we could see a significant price spike over the next six weeks. Traditionally, speculators bid up coffee prices ahead of the Brazilian winter, which runs from June through August. Then, if no frost damage occurs, prices tend to collapse by late August. John T. THE CONSUMER credit industry and analysts expected that the bankruptcy law passed last year would re-educate consumers to manage their debt sensibly, especially their credit card debt. But it turns out that the biggest problem may not be consumers behaving badly. Instead, it may be a series of unfortunate events such as illness, job loss and a cooling housing market. Shirley Dean, spokeswoman for Consumer Credit Counseling Services of the East Bay, a division of Money Management International, said the main reasons for debtor misery are “low savings rates, catastrophic illnesses, loan borrowings and real estate foreclosures.”
HOUSTON _ In its first major overhaul of federal bankruptcy law in 16 years, Congress recently made it tougher to use bankruptcy as a weapon against a former spouse. Bankruptcy reform also changed who is eligible for various kinds of bankruptcy and also how much property a filer can protect. How many professional or industry conferences have you been to? How much do you remember? A presentation at a conference is different from others. Although you are one of many, it is a chance to shine and your remarks can have a longer life span in reprints and reports. Here are some basic rules: Do not lecture. There will be plenty of other people doing that. Build in audience interaction during the speech. For example, if you are on a panel, begin by asking, How many of your companies have bought insurance based on price? Hands will shoot up. How many of you think that is the only criteria? All the hands will drop. Me, too, and that is what I want to talk about–how to explain to management those other criteria. Medium. Repetition makes the eyes grow heavy. I love PowerPoint, but by the thirtieth PowerPoint-illustrated presentation, nothing sticks. If you are on a panel, have the panel moderator canvass the others and allocate who uses what. Do not worry if you end up with overheads. They are up-to-date if done and used properly. (Include lots of color, and write on them during the presentation.)

MFI YESTERDAY blamed a dire end to its key winter sale for plunging like-for-like sales at its core UK retail business. The furniture group, which just three weeks ago guided the market to expect sales to recover, said its “outdated” bedroom ranges had put customers off buying its products. Its shares plunged 3 per cent to 140p. John Hancock, the chief executive, said the group had been “running to catch up” during the early weeks of its winter sale. “We would have expected a slightly stronger final three weeks,” he admitted. Like-for-like sales across its UK estate fell by 4 per cent from Boxing Day to 21 March, exacerbating the 3 per cent decline that the group reported last month. David Jeary, at Credit Suisse First Boston, said same-store sales must have fallen by 6 to 7 per cent in March, against the managements hopes that they would be flat against the previous year.
Chains Expand RTA Furniture Skus; Add Bedroom Sets New lines of bedroom furniture aimed at te discount market and the continued growing acceptance of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture among consumers has created a category that buyers say all but sells itself. Even more important to discount store buyers, the RTA consumer is evidently willing to trade up to higher prices as long as the product exhibits upgraded style and quality.

Secure Paper Shredding

December 22nd, 2008

In the golden age of television, Art Linkletter showed us that children say the darnedest things. Today, in the golden age of document security, shredder manufacturers are finding that people shred the darnedest things. Given the nature of their function, shredders have to be made to withstand a certain amount of punishment. But no matter how tough theyre made, users in the real world seem to have an uncanny knack for coming up with ways to stress them that the folks in the RD department probably never thought of. Its a tendency that lends credence to the old adage that somebody who claims to have made something `completely foolproof has probably sorely underestimated the ingenuity of a complete fool. “I am always amazed at how people can misbehave. Theres no device that I know of that gets abused and misused the way a shredder does. Our challenge is to make them tough enough yet still affordable,” says Tony Storrie, vice president of marketing for shredders at Fellowes Manufacturing.
Recent media reports about Arthur Anderson LLP and Enron Corp. imply that paper shredding is primarily a cover-up for wrong-doing. However, both the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) and the owner of an area shredding company say that document shredding is a sound-and ethical-business practice. “Proper shredding guarantees security. For liability issues, to protect against identity theft, deciding what to shred is very basic, anything with identifiers on it-a persons name, phone number, address, date of birth, social security number, thats a big one.” Recent federal legislation requires businesses to protect the security and confidentiality of patients and customers personal data. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (known as HIPAA) suggests that appropriate safeguards would include shredding documents containing protected health information prior to disposal. The Gramm-Leach-Biley Act of 1999 (also known as the Financial Services Modernization Act), doesnt mention shredding specifically, but requires that financial institutions and insurance companies discarding any paper documents containing personal information must safely destroy them.

GlaxoSmithKline on Tuesday opened an educational exhibit in New York City to prepare the country for alli, the first over-the- counter diet pillapproved by the Food and Drug Administration. “Peoples hopes are ridiculously high when it comes to diet pills. That leads to disappointment and bad word of mouth,” said Steven Brozak, an analyst with WBB Securities.

Manual of Travel Medicine and Health Robert Steffen, Herbert L. DuPont, and Annelies Wilder-Smith
Integrating NDs into the existing healthcare system is one step towards improving public health and lowering skyrocketing chronic degenerative disease rates. Naturopathic medicine is a system of primary health care which emphasizes optimal wellness, disease prevention, healthy lifestyle and patient education. Naturopathic doctors complete a four-year, graduate-level, accredited naturopathic medicine program to receive a Doctorate of Naturopathy (N.D.). This program is similar to conventional medical education, with the first two years concentrating on medical sciences, laboratory assessment and physical examination. However, the focus during the last two years is on body systems, natural therapies and supervised clinical training. Graduates must pass a national board examination in naturopathic medicine and fulfill individual state requirements before receiving a valid license. With a foundation grounded in the Western understanding of disease, NDs use botanical medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine, clinical nutrition and lifestyle counseling to support the bodys inherent healing abilities and empower patients to be pro-active in making the appropriate lifestyle changes necessary to maintain or achieve optimal health. By exploring all facets of their patients state of wellness–physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual–NDs discover imbalances, weaknesses and strengths. A typical first visit to a naturopathic doctor could take an hour or more, as your ND sifts through your medical history, performs any necessary physical exams or laboratory tests, uncovers individual or familial risk factors and strives to understand you–body, mind and spirit. NDs work in partnership with their patients and often with other health professionals in the community to develop the most beneficial healing strategy. Treatment plans recommended by NDs are based on the six guiding principles of naturopathic philosophy: * The healing power of nature (vis medicatrix naturae). NDs support the inherent healing wisdom of the body to promote, maintain or restore normal function.

A difference of opinion exists in the health beauty care category between retailers and consumers–they agreed on only four of the top 10 brands in the survey. Crest was the only brand to make the Power Brands list for its strength with both retailers and consumers. It was mentioned as a top performer by 21% of retailers and as a preferred brand by 13% of consumers. Conversely, Suave and Colgate were two out of 11 brands that lost standing as Power Brands. Suave had a weak showing with consumers, and Colgate fared poorly with both groups. Suave, however, earned near Power Brand status as did Pantene, both for their strength with retailers.
Masada Health and Beauty Corp., P.O. Box 4118
The health and beauty market encompasses a wide variety of sectors and for the purposes of this research incorporates haircare, oral care, shaving products, deodorants and body sprays, and personal washing items. The categories, together, are worth more than 2.2bn [pounds sterling] annually. The second largest category was deodorants and body sprays, and once again they all performed well with deodorants and male body sprays rising 8% each, while female body sprays rose 3%. The best performer was Lynx male body spray worth 50m [pounds sterling] and rising 11%. To put this figure into perspective, the second player in this sector was Addiction at 3m [pounds sterling]. Sure Body Responsive was the leading deodorant brand at 47m [pounds sterling], up 30%. Right Guard followed at 29m [pounds sterling]. Female body sprays were led by impulse at 23m [pounds sterling], and up 10% this year.

At this low ebb in Tory fortunes, the Westminster council scandal hands another hefty piece of ammunition to Labour. The auditors conclusions will be matched with those of Sir Richard Scotts Iraq report. Put crudely, its a message that says the Tories cannot be trusted with power. More subtly - since both Scott and Magill were called in to tidy up after that late Eighties period of Tory hegemony when arrogant politicians gave little thought to the niceties of proper procedure - the lesson is that the more politicians feel they walk on water, the more dangerous they get. The Westminster affair is also to do with amateurism and political paranoia. Lady Porter was always an exotic. She came late to politics and never really understood, let alone sympathised with, the local democratic system. Her fate confirms, perhaps unhappily, that modern British politics is a place for specialists alone. As a local authority, the City of Westminster has a specific character, from which one should not generalise too far. It is the only council to have a permanent Security Service liaison. (Westminsters permission is needed to allow MI5 to check manholes on the routes around Buckingham Palace.)Letting City Hall in Victoria fall into Labour hands seemed akin to giving away the Crown Jewels.

Get Out Of Debt

December 18th, 2008

RECORD numbers of people are declaring themselves bankrupt this year as their debts spiral out of control. The Department of Trade Industry revealed on Friday that bankruptcies are now running at their highest-ever levels. In the third quarter of last year 12,032 personal insolvencies were recorded in England and Wales, but for the same period this year the figures have soared by more than 46 per cent to 17,562.
The nonprofit National Endowment for Financial Education, based in Englewood, Colo., offers these tips to help people get out of debt — and stay that way: WRITE IT DOWN — Make a list of how much money you owe to each creditor and the interest rate. START THE SNOWBALL ROLLING — Pick the debt with the highest interest rate and put extra cash toward that balance. Once its paid off, put that extra cash toward the balance with the next highest rate.
THE average adult in Britain is pounds 6,000 in debt, according to new figures. Over three million of us owe pounds 12,000 or more, and thats not counting mortgages. Most people with debts have their borrowings on credit cards, personal loans and overdrafts well under control, but 10 per cent have problems paying back the money. Research from the Bank of Scotland shows that almost a third of those people are ignoring the problem in the hope it will go away on its own.

The economics of money, banking and finance; a European text, 4th ed.
One of the foremost financial writers of his generation, Peter Bernstein has the unique ability to synthesize intellectual history and economics with the theory and practice of investment management. Now, with classic titles such as Economist on Wall Street, A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold, and The Price of Prosperity - which have forewords by financial luminaries and new introductions by the author - you can enjoy some of the best of Bernstein in his earlier Wall Street days. With the proliferation of financial instruments, new areas of instability, and innovative capital market strategies, many economists and investors have lost sight of the fundamentals of the financial system–its strengths as well as its weaknesses. A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold takes you back to the beginning and sorts out all the pieces. Peter Bernstein skillfully addresses how and why commercial banks lend and invest, where money comes from, how it moves from hand to hand, and the critical role of interest rates. He explores the Federal Reserve System and the consequences of the Feds actions on the overall economy. But this book is not just about the past. Bernsteins novel perspective on gold and the dollar is critical for todays decision makers, as he provides extensive views on the future of money, banking, and gold in the world economy.

The ABC network sitcom Home Improvement first aired on September 17 1991 and ran for eight seasons through May 1999. During only its second season the show was renewed for three additional seasons an unusual decision in the television industry. Based on the stand-up comedy routine of its star Tim Allen (born Timothy Allen Dick in 1953) Home Improvement initially reflected Allens love of power tools cars and Sears department stores as well as mirroring his own family situation. Allen portrayed Tim Taylor the host of cable TVs “Tool Time.” His wife Jill was portrayed by Patricia Richardson. More than just comedy though Home Improvement epitomized the concerns of the largest generation in history the baby boomers. The Taylors were a representation of the average American family of the 1990s and their struggles although treated with light-hearted humor reflected the struggles of the shows demographic. In the main three fundamental concerns of the boomer generation were examined on a weekly basis–relationships family and the search for spirituality.
David Fields, marketing channel manager of Hickory Hardware of Nashville, TN, was elected vice president of the Home Improvement Research Institute.
