Pp. i-xvi + 585.This history of Swedish literature is the first of any size to appear in English since Alrik Gustafsons A History of Swedish Literature in 1961. Since the publication of that volume, much new literature has been published and views of older literature have changed. A History of Swedish Literature therefore, fills a long-felt need. It is the third volume in a series covering the history of literature of all the Nordic countries. In size–585 pages–it is comparable to the new 619-page history of literature by Bernt Olsson and Ingemar Algulin, Litteraturens historia i Sverige (1987; 1991; 1995). The editor, Lars G. Warme, has preferred to distribute the work among specialists rather than let one author do it all. The advantage is that the writers are well acquainted with their subjects. It is next to impossible for one author to treat everything with the same degree of expertise. The drawback is that approach and perspective may vary from part to part. Unfortunately, this is the case here. Although Birgitta Steene in her “Liberalism, Realism, and the Modem Breakthrough: 1830-1890″ and James Massingale to an even greater degree in his extremely well written account of The Enlightenment and the Gustavian Age” effectively describe the economic and social context of literature, it is scarcely touched upon in James Larsons chapter on the period 1523-1718 Throughout, the reader experiences great differences among the writers with regard to their mastery of factual information, familiarity with modern research, and pedagogical ability. A history of Swedish literature in English is mainly aimed at readers with little knowledge of Swedish. Therefore, adequate and accurate information about geographical and historical matters is essential. The present book does not always provide this. The past and present status of the Swedish language in Finland is never made clear. Frequently, Swedish provinces are mentioned without an indication of their location. The map on one of the front pages is insufficient and sometimes misleading. The account of Scanian literature ought also to have stressed that Sidnes cultural center was Copenhagen (and around 1900 also Berlin to a degree) and not Stockholm. A constant problem in Swedish literary history is the literature written in Swedish in Finland. It is obviously part of Swedish literature, but at the same time most Finno-Swedish authors remained in Finland all their lives and are part of a Finnish cultural community. The present volume takes up the well known figures: Runeberg, Topelius, Sodergran, Diktonius, Bjorling, and Enckell but presumably leaves the rest for the volume on Finnish literature. The reason stated in the introduction is to avoid repetition. It is difficult, however, to accept this explanation, particularly because repetition has not been avoided elsewhere. One reason for redundencies is the indistinct boundaries between literary periods, particularly in the case of the Gustavian Age and romanticism. In his survey of the Gustavian Age, Massingale largely ignores Thorild and Lidner, but is forced to give Thorild some attention in order to include Kellgrens criticism of him. He also treats Kellgrens late “preromantic” lyrics, including “Den nya Skapelsen.” In the chapter on the romantic period, Bertil Nolin treats Thorild and Lidner including Den nya Skapelsen” partly from the same point of view. Although this duplication might be justifiable, it is strange that Nolin also takes up Johan Gabriel Oxenstierna, whom Massingale has treated at some length. Both authors discuss how the universities took over Stockholms role as cultural center. Such duplications are not efficient and serve no pedagogic purpose. Another redundency is due to the fact that women writers are presented in their own chapter written by Cheri Register. Her justification is that it supplies “a complement to the history recounted in the preceding chapters.” Would it not have been better to give room for the feminist aspect of literary history in the main historical survey? The writers presented in the chapter on women–e.g. Sophia Elisabeth Brenner–should have been examined in their historical context, and Registers often important views would have had a stronger effect if they had been part of the main survey. The question of how readers are meant to use the book necessarily arises. For every female writer, are readers meant to go from the main text to the chapter “Women Writers” to look for complementary additions?

Admixtures: Water resisting - not proofing? I note that there are several articles relating to concrete in the ground in CONCRETE, February 2004. These articles contain claims and statements relating to concrete performance in resisting water penetration. These range from “Waterproofing. can be achieved. by using a water resisting admixture within the concrete.” to “admixtures may be used that provides waterproofing..of concrete” to “watertight concrete”. These article give the impression that concrete is, or can be, made waterproof or watertight with the addition of an admixture. These terms are considered in Concrete Society Technical Report 18 (second edition) A guide to the selection of admixtures for concrete and CIRIA reports 139 and 140 Water-resisting basements. Both documents indicate that concrete cannot be waterproof or watertight in the true meaning of the words since this implies impervious or absolute prevention of penetration by water in liquid and or gaseous form. The correct term that should be used is water-resisting, describing the ability to resist water. This depends on the concrete quality and the effect of any integral admixture. The main function of water-resisting admixtures is to reduce surface absorption and/or passage of water through the hardened concrete. Other benefits such as improved durability may also result from their addition. It is worth noting that BS 8007: 1987 Design of concrete structures for retaining aqueous liquids only requires a certain concrete grade, with limitations on cement content and water/cement ratio to give the necessary water-resisting performance. Water-resisting admixtures are not required. The weak points in any water-retaining or resisting concrete structure are seldom the concrete itself, but cracking and performance of construction and movement joints. These can be controlled with careful design and construction, thereby limiting and subsequent ingress or loss of water.

In regard to the operation of the legal process, the Program examines topics such as labor markets for lawyers, litigation dynamics, judicial and agency behavior, and the determinants of legislative action. In addition, the Program studies the effects and causes of legal rules across a range of legal subjects beyond property, criminal, contract, and tort law, including corporate law, employment law, health care law, social welfare law, family law, bankruptcy law, patent and copyright law, and antitrust law. The Program meets twice per year, once at a mid-year program meeting and again at the NBERS Summer Institute. The Programs recent special activities include a project in the area of corporate governance, under the direction of Research Associate Lucian Bebchuk; selected papers from that project are scheduled to appear in a forthcoming issue of the Review of Financial Studies. Property Law, Criminal Law, Contract Law, and Tort Law A fundamental aspect of any legal system is the structure of property rights. Recent work by Oliver Hart (13540) is the latest in an important line of papers by Hart, Sanford Grossman, and John Moore that examine the effects of a particular conception of property rights emphasizing “residual control.” In this view, the owner of an asset retains those rights to the asset that are not specifically assigned by any existing contractual commitment. While previous papers in the series have examined the effects of the residual control rights conception of property rights in the face of parties non-contractible up-front investments, the recent paper by Hart studies the effects of property rights of this form in a model with uncertainty of values and costs of a good to be traded. Harts model suggests that ex-ante contracting over asset ownership can reduce later incentives to engage in hold-up. A system that did not provide for property rights in the Grossman-Hart-Moore sense (reserving residual rights to the state rather than to the property owner) would be inferior within this framework.

ABSTRACT The article examines the degree of institutionalization of the Guatemalan party universe across four areas: the pattern of interparty competition; the rootedness of parties in society; the legitimacy accorded to parties and democratic institutions; and the nature of internal party organization. Guatemala displays an extremely inchoate party structure across all these variables. There is no stability in the identity of the main parties in the polity. After more than two decades of electoral democracy, no single party has been able to avert a drift into electoral irrelevance or outright disappearance. With respect to the basic facets of internal party organization, Guatemalan parties exhibit a feebleness so pronounced that their very status as parties is questionable. In general, Guatemalan “parties” only fulfill Sartoris minimalist definition as organizations that field candidates for public office, but offer nothing more substantive. The obstacles to building a well-functioning liberal democracy in Guatemala are many and often acknowledged: the legacy of an overbearing military stemming from the “counterinsurgency state,” an inordinate degree of income inequality and poverty, and a large indigenous population that is fundamentally absent from political life, among others (Jonas 1991; Poitevin 1999). But the legacy of the countrys wretched past also includes another crucial element that often goes unmentioned: the peculiar nature of its party universe and its parties. This essay qualitatively assesses the degree of institutionalization of the Guatemalan party system. The variables used for this task are those conceptualized by Mainwaring and Scully (1995) in their pioneering work: the pattern of interparty competition, the rootedness of parties in society, the legitimacy accorded to parties and democratic institutions, and the nature of internal party organization. While these components of institutionalization can surely be correlated with one another, empirically speaking, party systems do not necessarily exhibit uniformity across these variables; that is, they may be hybrid and underinstitutionalized in some respects while adequately institutionalized in others. This article will show that the Guatemalan party universe is exceptionally inchoate across all the aforementioned four elements. Comparative studies of Latin American party systems have usually ignored Guatemala, not least because of the marginal role that parties in this country play in the political process. This study seeks to fill this gap and provide a case study of underinstitutionalization virtually without parallel in the region.

automotive sales impact of print articles and print advertising. Then it
compares print articles and print advertising influence to other forms
of marketing communications used by auto buyers.

The study shows that the majority of vehicle buyers (62%) are influenced
to some degree by print articles, and 45% are influenced to some degree
by print advertising. 19% said print articles were a primary or secondary
purchase influence, and 8% reported that print advertising was a primary
